Site Description: Shanghai Theatre Academy is a higher art institution in China that cultivates specialized talents in drama. Its predecessor was the Shanghai Municipal Experimental Theatre School. It was founded on December 1, 1945 by renowned educator Gu Yuxiu and renowned playwrights Li Jianwu, Gu Zhongyi, Huang Zuolin, etc. Mr. Xiong Foxi was the first president of the academy. In October 1949, Shanghai Municipal Experimental Drama School was renamed as Shanghai Municipal Drama Junior College. In 1952, higher education institutions nationwide implemented departmental adjustments, and the Drama Department of Shandong University's Department of Arts and the Drama Group of Shanghai Xingzhi Art School were merged and officially established, renamed as the East China Branch of the Central Academy of Drama. In 1956, it was officially named Shanghai Theatre Academy, a higher art institution directly under the Ministry of Culture. In April 2000, it was transferred to Shanghai for co construction with the Ministry of Culture. In June 2002, the former School of Performing Arts at Shanghai Normal University, Shanghai Opera School, and Shanghai Dance School were merged into Shanghai Theatre College.
