    Three Gorges University was approved by the Ministry of Education and established on June 29, 2000 by the merger of the former Wuhan University of Water Resources and Electric Power (Yichang) and the former Hubei Three Gorges University. It is a key construction university during the "15th and 11th Five Year Plan" periods in Hubei Province. The predecessor of the former Wuhan University of Water Resources and Electric Power (Yichang) was the Gezhouba Hydroelectric Engineering College established in 1978, directly under the Ministry of Water Resources and Electric Power.
