Site Description: Yunnan University was founded in 1922 as a private Donglu University, renamed as the provincial Yunnan University in 1934, and renamed as the national Yunnan University in 1938. It is one of the first comprehensive university established in the western frontier of China. In 1937, Xiong Qinglai, a famous mathematician and educator, became the president, and a large number of well-known scholars gathered, including Gu Jiegang, Wu Wenzao, Liu Wendian, Chu Tunan, Yan Jici, Hua Luogeng, Shiing-Shen Chern, Feng Youlan, Fei Xiaotong, which laid a high foundation for the development of the school and laid a deep academic foundation, creating the first brilliant period in the history of Yunda. In the 1940s, Yunnan University had developed into one of the famous universities in China, including humanities, law, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, and other disciplines, with a large scale and international influence. In 1946, the Concise Encyclopedia Britannica listed Yunnan University as one of the 15 world-renowned universities in China.
