Site Description: Jinan University is the first overseas Chinese university founded by the state in China, the first university in China to enroll foreign students, the university with the largest number of overseas students in China, the key comprehensive university of the "211 Project", and directly under the leadership of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council. The word "Jinan" comes from the "Yu Gong" chapter of the Book of Shangshu: "It gradually spreads to the east by the sea, to the west by the quicksand, to the south by the new moon, and the sound education ends in the four seas." It means facing the Southern Ocean and spreading Chinese culture to the five continents and four seas. The predecessor of the school was the Jinan School established by the Qing government in Nanjing in 1906. Afterwards, it moved to Shanghai and was renamed as National Jinan University in 1927. During the Anti Japanese War, he relocated to Jianyang, Fujian. In 1946, he moved back to Shanghai. In August 1949, it merged with universities such as Fudan and Jiaotong. It was rebuilt in Guangzhou in 1958.
