Site Description: The predecessor of China University of Petroleum (Beijing) was based on the petroleum and chemical engineering departments of Tsinghua University, which gathered some teachers from universities such as Tianjin University and Peking University. Beijing Institute of Petroleum was founded in 1953 and was the first petroleum higher education institution in New China. In October 1960, the school was designated as a national key university. In 1969, the school moved to Shengli Oilfield in Dongying, Shandong and was renamed as "East China Petroleum Institute". In June 1981, the Graduate Department was established at the original campus of Beijing Institute of Petroleum.
