Since Bitcoin's inception, the question of "who is Satoshi Nakamoto?" has remained a persistent enigma. It is rumored that if Nakamoto is still alive, he could control as many as 680,000 Bitcoins, worth approximately $45 billion. Despite years of speculation, Nakamoto has remained anonymous, his identity shrouded in mystery. Some believe he is a solitary individual, while others suggest a team is behind the pseudonym.
Known for his investigative work, Hoback previously produced the documentary series "Q: Into the Storm," which examined the QAnon conspiracy theory and earned an Emmy nomination in 2021. Now focusing his lens on Satoshi, Hoback pieced together new and old evidence, interrogating Todd and another key suspect, Blockstream founder Adam Back, ultimately reaching his conclusion.
One of Hoback's key pieces of evidence is a post Todd made on a Bitcoin message board in 2010, which he believes is highly likely to have been written by "Satoshi." At the documentary's end, Hoback asks Todd, "It seems you had such a profound understanding of Bitcoin at the time?" to which Todd replies, "Well, yeah. It was me."
Todd, a Canadian citizen, has been coding for Bitcoin since 2012 and describes himself as a "cryptographer" on X. He is also the founder of OpenTimestamps, an open-source project aimed at providing a standardized format for blockchain timestamps. Now 39, Todd graduated from Ontario College of Art & Design University in Toronto. He was only 23 when the famous Bitcoin white paper was written, outlining the vision for a decentralized monetary system. Todd previously stated on a podcast that he first interacted with key figures in the crypto space, known as "cypherpunks," at around 15 years old.
Additionally, Todd was involved in projects dubbed "Bitcoin 2.0," including Counterparty, Mastercoin, and ColoredCoins. He also co-launched the privacy coin zcash with NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden in 2016 and publicly destroyed the computer used to create the cryptocurrency.
Facing the accusations from the documentary, Todd quickly issued a statement on X, denying that he is Satoshi and calling Hoback's claims "nonsense." The documentary's release has sparked significant criticism online, with many in the crypto community questioning its conclusions. Some argue that the evidence presented in the film isn't sufficient to definitively link Todd to Satoshi.
Nic Carter, a founding partner of CastleIslandVentures, stated, "He's one of the most important Bitcoin people, from a technical point of view. He's known Todd since 2017. People generally consider his opinion on Bitcoin to be quite important. But I'm convinced Todd isn't Satoshi, partly because the creator of Bitcoin had such a deep understanding of cryptography and digital cash systems."
"There's no bigger mystery in history. It's really magical that, allegedly, Satoshi holds a giant hoard of Bitcoin tokens. He pulled it off. I personally hope we never know who Satoshi is."
