On July 21st, VitalikButerin participated in the Ethereum Community Conference (ETHCC) held in Paris and delivered a speech on the progress of Ethereum merger and Ethereum's future roadmap.
VitalikButerin stated that Bitcoin supporters believe that Bitcoin has completed 80%, but Ethereum supporters believe that Ethereum has only completed 40%. Ethereum developers will go through five long-term stages: TheMerge, TheSurge, TheVerge, ThePurge, and TheSpluge. Ethereum can achieve 100000 TPS after completing five key stages.
Merge refers to the transfer from PoW to PoS, which involves merging the Ethereum main network with the beacon chain. Vitalik stated that Merge is just a small step on the path of Ethereum's development, and the next four stages are key parts of Ethereum's expansion, cleaning, and evolution.
It is reported that The Merge is currently 90% complete and only needs to be tested on Ropesten. Once the 'merger' successfully occurs, validators can extract the ETH they have locked into the ETH2.0 deposit contract. It is expected that after the merger is completed in September this year, Ethereum will still only complete about 55%.
Surge is about the introduction of sharding in Ethereum, and once completed, the Ethereum network will process transactions faster. Verge is about introducing Verkle trees, aiming to optimize storage on Ethereum and help reduce node size, ultimately improving network scalability. Purge aims to reduce the hard disk space required for validators, eliminate historical data and bad debts, thereby simplifying storage and reducing network congestion. Spluge is a series of miscellaneous items that include "minor" upgrades to ensure smooth network operation after the first four stages.
In addition, Vitalik stated that we are in a stage of rapidly changing protocols to enhance Ethereum capabilities. But in the end, we will stop making rapid changes to the protocol and use systems such as L2 to add more features to the Ethereum ecosystem. Among them, L1 is used for security and reliability, and L2 is used for fast iterative operations.
