Recently, @ CelestiaOrg has launched Blobstream for the Ethereum ecosystem, using a lightweight client format to help Ethereum developers easily build layer2. Obviously, they are attempting to further weaken the dependence of Layer2 developers on Ethereum DA, in order to increase the weight of their modular DA in the Ethereum ecosystem.
Personally, I do not deny the prospect of modular DA, but it is not a good thing to rush into the Ethereum layer2 camp.
Mainstream Layer2 relies on Ethereum as the DA layer in the form of a "call date", which is the result of balancing security and consensus. If DA is stripped off of Ethereum, Layer2's consensus will not be protected by the Ethereum main network.
Because if Ethereum does not participate in DA, the Ethereum main network will only become the asset settlement layer of Layer2. If Layer2 consensus layer has premeditated wrongdoing, even if it is a "bad debt", the main network will have to "legally" settle. In this way, layer2 is not just an extension of expanding Ethereum, but a destroyer of infiltrating and disrupting Ethereum. Although the probability of this is not high, in the long run, the hidden dangers in this regard cannot be ruled out. To some extent, although Ethereum's DA capability is weak, waiting for Cancun to upgrade and always embracing Ethereum DA would be an absolute legitimate choice for Ethereum layer2.
At present, we only see L2beat removing a batch of non Ethereum DAs from Layer2. If the trend of this DA deviating from Ethereum continues to intensify, it is not ruled out that Vitalik will jump out and publicly intervene against it in the future.
If some chains themselves are just a transition to layer2, and the ultimate goal is to create independent chains, then Ethereum can be used as the settlement layer, Celestia can be used as the DA layer, and all primary components can be packaged in a modular manner. It is naturally not important whether Ethereum DA is used or not.
